Dental Sedation

One of the top reasons that patients hesitate to get dental implants is due to their fear of pain or surgery. At Premier Dental Implants, your comfort and satisfaction are our top concerns. When you visit our team for implant placement, we can assure you that we utilize gentle techniques, careful planning, and dental sedation to ensure the best experience overall.

Our sedative options make the entire journey more peaceful while easing feelings of discomfort. To learn more about dental sedation, please read below. If you have any questions or would like to request sedation for your appointment, please contact our Louisville, KY, office.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is a means of rendering a person semi-conscious for short periods of time. It can be used in limited circumstances to relieve anxiety and pain in dental surgery procedures, such as implant placement.

Oral sedation involves taking a pill one to two hours before treatment commences. It is usually carried out in our dental practice or at home before you arrive for your appointment. Due to the intense feelings of drowsiness associated with this medication, it will be essential for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the practice.

Oral sedation works by affecting the central nervous system. The medicine reduces your level of anxiety by slowing everything down, including your heart rate and breathing. You will not be unconscious or completely “out” during your procedure. As the sedative begins taking effect, we will monitor your pulse and breathing to limit the escalation of any adverse reactions – chances of this are extremely rare, though it’s important that you notify us of any known medication allergies, cardiac, or respiratory sensitivities before proceeding.

Benefits of Oral Sedation

Oral sedation offers several benefits that keep you comfortable throughout the surgery; this includes the following advantages:

  • Oral sedation can help anxious patients relax during treatment, making it easier for our team to perform the implant placement. We can tailor the dosage level just for you.
  • Oral sedatives are different from general anesthesia, which is used to render a patient unconscious, usually for major surgeries performed outside of the mouth. We can control your level of sedation just enough to relax you during your dental procedure while still allowing you to respond to verbal cues or tactile commands.
  • You should still be able to talk and respond to your dentist or medical doctor during the procedure. Although you may feel drowsy, you’ll still be aware of what’s going on around you and who is in the room with you. When it’s time for your oral surgery, your dentist will give you the dosage that makes you most relaxed and comfortable while still allowing you to talk and respond to our doctors and communicate if you need anything.
